On making pictures when you should be recovering

These two images were made in the Christmas to New Year break 2010/11. I had come down with the typical end-of-work-year sickness bug and had stayed at home for a couple of days whilst the family headed off to grandparents in the Midlands. I was supposed to be recovering but I couldn’t help making images.

The main image was scouted when I was out walking at Skipwith with my handheld compact camera. Skipwith has been a walking ground but, more importantly, a playground for my cameras since I moved into the area in 2007. I returned with the full kit to make this image. I love how the log seems to be sleeping with one eye open.

I headed down to Kenilworth for the New Year and then came back early. Just as I reached Goole the snow started and the last stretch back was very slow - the roads were slippery and visibility was very limited. I got up early the next morning and headed back to Skipwith. It was like a winter wonderland. The alternative image was the first I made that day and my favourite. I like the sense of depth created by the light at the back.
